Pest control with cats and dogs at home in Dubai

Booking pest control with a cat, dog, bird or fish tank at home in Dubai? What to ask the company, how to keep pets away, and signs that mean a vet visit.

Short answer

  • Tell the company about every pet before booking, and ask which products they will use and how long pets must stay away.
  • Keep pets out of treated rooms; the times quoted in UAE press range from about 4 to 6 hours.
  • Cockroach gel and ant bait must be placed where pets cannot reach or lick them. Rat bait needs particular care.
  • Birds and fish are sensitive to fumes and sprays; move birds out and ask about covering or moving fish tanks.
  • If a pet drools, vomits, trembles or wobbles after a treatment, take it to a vet immediately with the product name.

You can have pest control done with cats and dogs at home in Dubai, but plan it. Tell the company about every pet before you book. Keep pets out of treated rooms for the time the company gives you in writing, and make sure gel or bait is out of their reach. If a pet shows signs of being unwell afterwards, take it to a vet immediately.

We cannot tell you that any product is safe for your pet. That is a question for your vet, with the product details in hand.

What should you ask the pest control company before booking?

Ask these questions when you get the quote, not on the day:

  • Are you on Dubai Municipality's approved list? A 2024 Gulf News Q&A for pet owners and families suggested checking the company is licensed by the municipal authority in your emirate (Gulf News, May 2024). Our guide on how to check a company is DM-approved shows how.
  • What will you use, and where? Ask whether it is a spray, gel, bait station, powder or rodent bait, and which rooms.
  • Can I have the safety data sheet? A 2018 Gulf News report suggested asking for a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Your vet can use it if anything goes wrong.
  • How long must pets stay away, and from which rooms? Get it in writing.
  • Is there a follow-up visit? Many treatments need a second visit, so you will repeat the plan.
  • Do you have insurance, and will you give a written estimate? Both are on the 2024 Gulf News checklist.

Then call your vet. Tell them the product details and ask whether your pet needs anything extra, especially if it is very young, old, pregnant or unwell.

How long should pets stay away after pest control?

No single Dubai Municipality figure was found. These are the times quoted in UAE press:

Source and date Who it applies to Time away
Gulf News explainer, updated September 2018 People, children and pets, most cases About 4 hours
Gulf News Q&A, May 2024 (entomologist quoted) Infants and children About 5–6 hours, then ventilate and wipe surfaces
Gulf News Q&A, May 2024 Pets Keep away from treated areas; no hours given

Sources: Gulf News, 2018; Gulf News, May 2024.

Use these as background only. The company's written instructions for the product used come first. Many owners keep pets out for longer, or until floors and surfaces are wiped. Our guide on how long to stay out after pest control has the full detail for people.

How do you keep cats and dogs away during treatment?

A simple plan for treatment day:

  1. Choose a pet room that is not being treated, or take pets to a friend, boarding or daycare for the day.
  2. Move bowls, beds, toys and litter trays out of rooms being treated.
  3. Close the pet room door before the technician starts, and put a note on it.
  4. Keep pets out until the agreed time has passed and you have ventilated.
  5. Wipe floors pets walk on if the company agrees. Dogs can pick up residue on their paws and lick it off, a US military public health page notes (Defense Health Agency, 2024).
  6. Check for bait spots at nose height before letting pets back in.

Cats need extra thought. They climb into cupboards and behind appliances, which is exactly where cockroach gel goes. The same US page notes that cats can be sensitive to some insecticides even when products are used correctly, and says to check with your vet.

Is cockroach gel a risk to cats and dogs?

Cockroach gel and ant bait are placed in small dots in cracks, hinges and behind appliances, rather than sprayed across rooms. That is why many people choose them. It does not make them harmless to a pet that finds them.

  • The US public health page advises keeping enclosed ant and cockroach bait stations out of pets' reach.
  • Pet Poison Helpline warns that cats can be harmed by licking boric acid, a common roach-control ingredient, and that kittens are especially vulnerable because of their size (Pet Poison Helpline, 2026).

What to ask the technician:

  • Where exactly will the gel go? Can it stay out of reach of a climbing cat?
  • Will you use enclosed bait stations instead of open gel in reachable places?
  • Should I avoid wiping these spots? (Wiping can stop gel working, so agree which spots to leave and which to protect.)

If your pet licks or eats gel or bait, do not wait for signs. Call a vet straight away.

Why is rat and mouse bait a bigger worry?

Rodent bait is designed to kill mammals. The ASPCA says any pet exposure to rodenticide should be treated seriously, and that very small amounts of some baits can be life-threatening to dogs and cats (ASPCA, 2022). The US public health page adds that pets can be poisoned by eating a poisoned rodent.

If you have pets and rats or mice, ask the company:

  • whether traps or tamper-resistant stations can be used instead of loose bait
  • exactly where every station is, so you can check them
  • to leave the bait packaging or label details with you, which the ASPCA says helps a vet identify the product

What about birds and fish tanks?

Birds. The MSD Veterinary Manual says birds' respiratory tracts are very sensitive to chemical fumes, and lists pesticides among household hazards (MSD Veterinary Manual, 2025). Tell the company you have birds. Moving them out of the home for the treatment and airing period is a common precaution. Ask your vet how long to wait before bringing them back.

Fish. The US public health page says fish can be sensitive to some common insecticides (pyrethroids), and that spray drift can reach indoor aquariums even outside the treated area. Tell the technician before they start. Ask whether to cover the tank, switch off the air pump, or move it, and what the product label says about fish.

Rabbits, hamsters and reptiles: none of our sources covered these specifically. Tell the company and ask your vet.

Do fleas and ticks need pest control or a vet?

Both. The 2024 Gulf News Q&A said a pet with fleas or ticks must be treated by a vet, and that the areas the pet uses, including the car used to transport it, should be inspected and treated. Do not use household pest products on your pet.

What are the signs a pet may have been poisoned?

These are general signs listed by US public health and vet poison sources. They are not a diagnosis:

  • drooling or salivating a lot
  • vomiting or diarrhoea
  • tremors or shaking
  • wobbly or uncoordinated walking
  • loss of appetite or unusual tiredness
  • skin irritation where the pet touched a product

Pet Poison Helpline notes that some signs may appear hours after a pet swallows a product. The US public health page says early diagnosis and treatment can save a pet's life.

What to do: take the pet to a vet immediately, or call a 24-hour vet clinic on the way. Bring the product name, the safety data sheet, or a photo of the label. The hotline numbers in the US sources serve North America; in Dubai, go to your vet.

If a person in the home feels unwell, call 999 or seek urgent medical help.

Never do this with pets at home

  • Never let anyone use pesticide "bombs" or tablets. They are banned in UAE homes and have killed people. See why aluminium phosphide is banned.
  • Do not buy professional pesticides to use yourself.
  • Do not hire unlicensed operators offering cheap whole-flat fogging. Thermal fogging inside flats was banned in Dubai in 2012, Khaleej Times reported.

What to check before you act

  • Have you told the company about every pet, including birds and fish?
  • Do you have the product names, safety data sheet and stay-away time in writing?
  • Have you spoken to your vet, especially for young, old or unwell pets?
  • Are bowls, beds and litter trays out of treated rooms?
  • Do you know where every gel spot and bait station is?
  • Do you know your nearest 24-hour vet?

Questions people ask

Is cockroach gel safe for cats and dogs?

We cannot tell you any product is safe for your pet. Gel and bait are placed in small spots, but pets can lick or eat them, so ask the company where they will put it and keep pets away. If your pet eats any, call a vet immediately.

How long should pets stay away after pest control in Dubai?

There is no single Dubai Municipality figure. A 2018 Gulf News explainer said about four hours in most cases, and a 2024 article gave five to six hours for infants and children. Follow the company's written instructions and ask your vet if your pet is young, old or unwell.

What are the signs a pet has been poisoned by pest control?

US public health and vet poison sources list drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, tremors and wobbly walking, and some signs can appear hours later. Take the pet to a vet straight away with the product name or label.

Can I stay in the flat with my cat during pest control?

Most guidance says to keep pets away from treated areas during and after treatment. Move your cat to a closed room that is not being treated, or out of the home, and ask the company what it recommends for the products used.

What about my fish tank and birds?

Fish can be sensitive to some insecticides, and spray drift can reach indoor tanks. Birds' airways are very sensitive to chemical fumes. Tell the company in advance and move birds out of the home if you can.
