Mosquitoes after rain in Dubai: what to do and who to call

Why mosquitoes surge after rain in Dubai, a standing-water checklist for your home, and how to report breeding sites to Dubai Municipality or the ministry.

Short answer

  • Mosquitoes surge after rain because water collects in new places, and eggs hatch in about 24 to 48 hours.
  • Empty or cover standing water around your home every two to three days after a storm.
  • A few millilitres of water, roughly a bottle cap's worth, is enough for mosquitoes to breed.
  • For mosquitoes at home, request Dubai Municipality's free pest control on 800900.
  • Report larger stagnant-water sites to the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment on 8003050.

Mosquito numbers in Dubai rise after rain because water collects in places it normally doesn't, and mosquito eggs laid there hatch within a day or two. The best thing you can do is empty or cover standing water around your home within a few days of a storm. If mosquitoes are biting indoors or you spot water you can't clear, you can ask Dubai Municipality for its free pest control service on 800900. You can report larger stagnant-water sites to the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment on 8003050.

Why are there more mosquitoes after rain in Dubai?

Mosquitoes breed in still water. In April 2026, The National reported that a female mosquito lays 50 to 200 eggs at a time. Those eggs hatch in about 24 to 48 hours, and a few millilitres of water, roughly a bottle cap's worth, is enough for breeding.

Dubai's dry climate normally limits those spots. After heavy rain, water sits in plant pots, blocked drains, construction pits, unused pools and balcony corners. Each puddle that stays for several days can produce a new batch.

This has happened after recent storms. After the 27 March 2026 storm, residents in several communities reported more mosquitoes and mayflies, according to The National on 14 April 2026. The same article said cockroaches and rodents can also become more common after rain. Flies tend to rise too, especially near rubbish and wet organic waste.

How do you get rid of standing water at home?

Start the day after the rain stops and repeat every few days for a couple of weeks. Short, frequent checks work better than one big clean-up because new water keeps appearing.

Where to look What to do
Plant pots and saucers Empty saucers; tip out water trapped in pots; avoid overwatering
Balconies and terraces Sweep or mop out puddles; clear blocked balcony drains
Buckets, bins, toys, tyres Turn them upside down, cover them or bring them inside
Bird baths and pet bowls outdoors Change the water every day or two
Fountains and water features Keep the water moving, or drain them until the weather settles
Private pools Check them regularly; drain or cover a pool you are not using
Roof gutters and drains Clear leaves and debris so water runs away
AC units, taps and fridges Fix drips and leaks that leave small pools
Garden low spots and irrigation basins Drain, cover or move water regularly
Construction pits or empty plots nearby Don't enter them; report them (see below)

These points come from advice by Dubai Municipality after the April 2024 storm, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment in May 2024, and The National in April 2026.

Worked example: a villa with a garden, a covered pool and twenty pot plants has more breeding spots than most people expect. Ten pot saucers, a pool cover holding rainwater, a child's paddling pool and a blocked gutter add up to fourteen separate sites. Each one only needs a few millilitres to breed. A ten-minute walk-round every two or three days, emptying and tipping, removes most of them.

In flats, the usual culprits are balcony drains, plant saucers and the tray under a dripping AC unit.

How can you avoid mosquito bites after rain?

The National's April 2026 report passed on simple advice. Use insect repellent, and wear long sleeves and trousers if you sit outside for a long time, especially in the evening when mosquitoes are most active. Keep window and door screens closed, and fix torn screens.

Read the label on any repellent before using it on children. Ask a doctor or pharmacist about babies, young children or pregnancy.

Some details on the Dubai Municipality service:

  • Who gets it free. In November 2024, Khaleej Times reported that residents get free treatment for flies, mosquitoes and rodents, plus poisonous pests such as scorpions and snakes. Citizens can request treatment for all public health pests.
  • How fast. Requests are handled within four working days, or 24 hours for poisonous pests. The National confirmed these times for Dubai Now requests in April 2026.
  • Repeat requests. If the problem continues, you can ask again 15 days after the first request, according to dubizzle (August 2024) and Khaleej Times (November 2024).
  • Where it doesn't apply. The service is not provided in Jebel Ali Free Zone, which uses its own contractor, Emdad. It also does not cover investment and real estate development areas, where the developer must hire an approved private company.

Khaleej Times said in 2024 that the Dubai Now app route was for citizens. If the app does not offer you the option, use 800900 or the DM app instead. Our Dubai Municipality free pest control guide covers eligibility and channels in more detail.

If you choose a private company instead, check it is on Dubai Municipality's approved list first. See how to check a pest control company is Dubai Municipality-approved.

What does Dubai Municipality do about mosquitoes after rain?

Dubai Municipality treats mosquitoes after storms at the source rather than only spraying adults. Published reports describe the following:

  • Larvae-eating fish. In April 2026, The National reported that the Municipality breeds up to 20,000 larvivorous fish a year. It releases them into breeding hotspots to cut the use of chemical pesticides.
  • Biological larvicides. Teams use bacterial tablets and insect growth regulators that target larvae.
  • Traps. Smart traps use carbon dioxide and a scent lure to draw in mosquitoes.
  • Inspections. Teams check stagnant water, drainage outlets, stormwater systems, lakes, construction sites, residential areas and farms.

After the April 2024 storm, the Dubai Media Office said on 5 May 2024 that the Municipality had treated 102 water collection sites and over 75,000 drainage outlets. It used 511 litres of liquid and 391 kg of solid pesticides. It also used bacterial capsules for larvae, sprays and smoke treatments against adult mosquitoes, and traps.

For the October 2026 rain, the Municipality activated its rainy-weather response plan on 22 October 2026, according to Gulf Today (citing WAM). The plan includes insect surveillance in likely breeding areas, large numbers of mosquito traps, manual sprayers, thermal fogging devices and sample-testing units. It also includes about 675 response staff, 10 temporary water collection lakes and more than 70,000 cleaned drainage inlets. Our news post on the rain plan has the details.

Is dengue a risk after rain in Dubai?

The risk is low. In April 2026, The National described dengue as extremely rare in the UAE. It noted that hospitals reported some cases after the severe 2024 storms and said the risk that year was low.

Getting rid of standing water and avoiding bites are the sensible steps either way. We don't give medical advice. If you or a family member has a fever, especially after being bitten, see a doctor. In an emergency, call 999.

What to check before you act

  • Walk around your home, balcony and garden for standing water every two to three days after rain.
  • Check whether you live in an area covered by Dubai Municipality's free service, or in JAFZA or a developer-run community with its own contractor.
  • Use 800900 (or DM WhatsApp or the DM app) for mosquitoes at home, and 8003050 for wider stagnant-water sites.
  • If you hire a private company, confirm it is on Dubai Municipality's approved list.
  • See a doctor for any fever. Do not self-diagnose.
